The Mountaineer Players started in 1923 with a presentation of Robin of Sherwood. The production was unique, as the audience was led from clearing  to clearing in the lowland old-growth forest, to be presented with successive scenes of the play. The annual play continues uninterrupted (except for 3 years during WWII) on the Mountaineers Kitsap Property . The Mountaineer Players pride themselves on a family-friendly work ethic, inclusion of members of all ages and our educational outdoor theater experience. Many participant families are of a second or third generation. Play auditions are in February; rehearsals are March through the end of May; with our performance run Memorial Day weekend thru June. Recently, we have added a show in the Summer (August run, audtions in March) plus a outdoor theater camp for kids in July. Details in the the event calendar.
The Mountaineers Kitsap Forest Theater, located near Bremerton Washington, is believed to be one of the oldest outdoor theaters in the United States, being constructed in 1928. William C. Darling designed the theater in 1926, spending many hours in this natural amphitheater determining how best to use the space so that sunlight streaming through the branches of the trees would form natural spotlights, and the beauty of nature would remain as undisturbed as possible. The theater roof is the sky, the walls are the forest, the wings are cedar bark covered with living moss, and the foundation is the earth.
The Mountaineers Kitsap property, including the Kitsap Forest Theater , is located  approximately 7 miles west of downtown Bremerton in unincorporated Kitsap County. The 21-acre property is home to Kitsap Cabin, built in 1918 by mostly women volunteers during WWI; a dormitory; shower/bath facility and several other utility buildings. It is listed on the Washington Heritage Register as an historically significant site. A dedicated group of Mountaineer Club  volunteers work to operate, maintain, and preserve this property and its heritage. The property hosts the annual play by the Mountaineer Players, is a meeting and activity center for the Kitsap Branch of the Mountaineers as well as hosting workparties and social events year-round as shown on the event calendar.
